In previous PrEP studies, there was only a 44% reduction in HIV transmission based solely on patient’s not taking their Truvada pill daily. However, two new studies recently presented, provided encouraging news. The PROUD study used daily Truvada and the IPERGAY study focused on a new approach of “on demand” or “intermittent” Truvada use.
In the IPERGAY study, participants took a total of four pills of Truvada. Two tablets were taken 2 to 24 hours before sex and two tablets 24 to 48 hours after sex. Both studies noted an 86% reduction in transmission of HIV. This is a huge improvement from previous studies! Additional forms of PrEP are currently being studied such as injections every three months, which may prove to be more effective.
