All About the Under Eye
To quote Nathan Lane in The Birdcage; “”You look tired” means “You look old.” And “You look rested” means “You’ve had collagen.”” When your under eyes have dark circles, puffiness, fine lines or decreased fat and collagen, you look tired, overworked, and older than you really are or feel. A more youthful under eye is one of the most common concerns next to acne and aging. Caused by broken vessels, overstimulated melanocytes, or a loss of fat and collagen, it can be hard to pinpoint the most effective treatment to reverse the damage of ones aging eyes. And with a naturally more delicate layer of skin this area has to treated with the upmost care.
Reduce Discoloration
Dark circles are caused by several different factors, and pin pointing the source of each individual patient determines how to correct it. In most cases it can be caused by broken capillaries that cause a pooling of blood, or “bruising” in the dermis of the skin. One of my favorite series to help counteract this is microneedling which creates micro channels in the epidermis, causing a controlled wound to activate growth factors such as TGFβ3 and stimulates angiogenesis to produce new blood vessels and increased extracellular matrix.
Patients who naturally have darker skin already have increased melanocytes, which can be increased in the eye area as a natural protective response to any skin trauma is an increase of melanin. I find it best to use products that include ingredients to not only lighten the existing pigmentation but inhibit tyrosinase to prevent further pigmentation from forming. Topical products containing retinol, Vitamin C, and chromabrite.
More Volume Less Shadows!
The second primary cause of dark circles is decreased collagen or loss of adipose fat tissue, causing drooping skin and a concave shape to the natural facial structure. As a result instead of reflecting the light, shadows are formed giving the eyes a darker appearance. Your options for treatment are simple; dermal fillers to fill the area, restoring a natural curve or a collagen boosting treatment. Ultherapy® is currently the only FDA approved non-invasive treatment on the market to tighten and lift the skin on the face, brow and neck. Micro-focused ultrasound waves are delivered into the dermis, creating heat to boost your natural collagen production. Not only will it physically tighten and lift the skin, it can also replenish lost volume in the skin. The results occur progressively over 6 months, sometimes up to a year and the results can last up to 5 years!
